back to school marketing

As much as we hate to say goodbye to summer, back to school season is quickly approaching. With parents spending on averaging $873 per child on back to school items, this is a huge opportunity for your business. How are you going to capture back to school sales and stand out from the competition? Below are four back to school marketing ideas.

1. Cater to busy parents

Busy, on-the-go parents don’t have much time for back to school shopping. They are relying on their mobile phones and convenience. Are you making it easy for these busy parents to find what they’re looking for quickly and conveniently? If you don’t have a website, you should get one, and make sure that it’s mobile-friendly. When people are searching online for back to school deals, you want your business to be found. If you need help building a website, our parent company, Deluxe, can help you.

In addition to making your business accessible online, create a convenient in-store experience as well. Make sure you have well-placed back to school displays. Integrate your online and in-store experience. If you promote a deal online, include the specific location in the store where the deal can be found. Remember to think like a busy parent, and do whatever you can to make their shopping experience a pleasant one!

2. Get creative

Maybe your business doesn’t sell the “regular” school supplies like clothes, shoes, or notebooks. What do you sell that you could cater to the back to school crowd? A hair salon could discount back to school haircuts. And don’t forget about college students. Since they will be furnishing their dorms, they will need a lot of “non-traditional” types of items.

You could also partner with local charities that provide students with school supplies. Maybe you donate a notebook for every notebook sold. Or, you could get your customers on board by asking if they’d like to round up to the nearest dollar for charity. Whichever route you choose to go, be sure to advertise it. People may choose your business over another because they care about the cause.

3. Sales and promotions

Offering special back to school deals is a great way to increase sales. 61% of parents say that sales and promotions are a determining factor when back to school shopping. If you want to compete for back to school sales, you need to offer some type of sale or promotion. Advertise your deals wherever possible: social media, signs outside of your shop, flyers, word of mouth. Bundling items, offering a percent discount, or promoting specific products as buy-one-get-one are all great back to school deals.

Hopefully these back to school marketing ideas inspire you to sell more during this back to school season. Have you tried any other ideas that have worked well? We’d love to hear from you in the comments!
