Minnesota Resort Gives Back to Veterans
Every year on November 11th, we honor our country’s veterans for their patriotism, sacrifice, and willingness to serve our country and its citizens. Veterans play such an important role in our country, and they deserve honor and respect every day of the year, not just one day of the year. Veterans on the Lake Resort in Ely, MN is a business that shows veterans honor and respect on a daily basis. They are a non-profit organization, providing veterans and their guests a beautiful place to relax and vacation.
The resort has been a customer of Deluxe (Bags & Bows’ parent company) for nearly 25 years. We had the opportunity to connect with Julie Sheehy, the business manager, and learn more about the resort and the service they provide our veterans.
The resort was founded in 1982. Since then, veterans and their guests from over 25 states have enjoyed the resort including groups from the MN State Veterans Homes in Minneapolis, Hastings, Fergus Falls and Silver Bay and the VA Medical Centers in both St. Cloud and Iowa City, IA.
When and how did you first start working there?
I started here in 2007 as a seasonal part-time office worker. I got hooked and stayed!
What’s your favorite part about your job?
Meeting new veterans and their guests and welcoming back our regulars.
What inspires you to come to work each day?
I truly believe that what we provide for these veterans is necessary and important. My goal is to reach out to more veterans, to make it possible for them to come here at the most affordable rates.
What is the unique experience you provide Veterans?
This resort is a safe and accessible vacation in a beautiful wilderness setting. Each veteran is unique and so are their needs; if they want camaraderie they will find it here. If they need peace and alone time, they will also have that opportunity. We also provide free use of golf carts and/or motorized scooters if needed for those with mobility issues.
Who have been some of your most memorable clients?
There have been so many!! One is a disabled veteran from out of state who has the most contagious positive outlook! He brings sunshine wherever he goes! Another is a veteran, also disabled, who truly put his heart and soul into this resort. He put on fundraisers and told anyone who would listen about this great place. He always put others before himself.
How do you get the word out about your resort?
We send out brochures, do some fundraisers, advertise in the MN Legionaire (American Legion), and also word of mouth.
This past week, November 3-7, was National Veterans Small Business Week. Veterans play such a vital role in American small businesses. Did you know that veterans are responsible for nearly one out of every ten small businesses in America and they employ nearly six million workers? Veterans on the Lake Resort is a great place for veterans to come and unwind, whether they run a small business or not. It’s a wonderful service Julie and her team provides.
On this Veterans Day, we at Bags & Bows want to say “thank you!” to the many individuals who have served our country. You are so appreciated and valued.
