3 Ways to Celebrate Mitten Tree Day
The holiday season is a beautiful time of year where people show kindness and give to those in need. Celebrating Mitten Tree Day is one way to spread holiday cheer to those who need it most. This is a perfect holiday activity to incorporate into your small business during this season.
Mitten Tree Day is celebrated on December 6th every year. The holiday was most likely inspired by the endearing children’s book, The Mitten Tree, written by Candace Christiansen. In the story, a woman named Sarah notices there are some children who do not have mittens and cannot play in the snow with the other children. She decides to anonymously knit mittens for them and hangs them in an evergreen tree for the children to find and use. People have brought this story to life by setting up Christmas trees where people can hang mittens to donate to those in need. Below are a few ways you can celebrate Mitten Tree Day this year in your own business.
1. Sponsor your own mitten tree
Probably the simplest and most obvious way to celebrate Mitten Tree Day is to set up a tree in your business and encourage people to donate mittens, gloves, scarves, hats, etc. These items can then be donated to those who need them in your community. You could partner with a homeless shelter, school, food shelf, or other organization. Get the word out about your mitten tree by displaying signs inside and outside your store. You can also promote it on social media, your website, and any emails or mailers you’re sending.
To increase participation and donations, you could even have some sort of contest. Consider giving away a nice pair of mittens to whoever donates the most items. Or, the prize could be any holiday or winter-related product your business sells. If your business sells hats, scarves, or mittens, consider offering a discount on those items if people are buying them to donate to the mitten tree. Remind customers at the register about the mitten tree and ask if they would like to purchase items to donate or give a set amount of money for the tree.
2. Host a children’s event
Even if you’re not a library or bookstore, you can take advantage of this holiday by hosting a children’s event and reading aloud The Mitten Tree. You can make the event complete with holiday cheer by providing hot chocolate, holiday goodies, and festive décor. This is also a great way to raise awareness if your business has its own mitten tree for donations.
You can also host a craft time for children to make paper mittens. Depending on the age of the children, you can precut the mittens and the children can decorate them. Or, you can have them cut out their own mitten shapes and then decorate. Have children put their names on the mittens and then hang them on a special tree designated for that purpose. This is a fun way to encourage community involvement, and you can even suggest that parents leave a donation of weather gear for the mitten tree.
3. Offer a class on knitting or crocheting
Another fun idea is to host a class where people can come learn how to knit or crochet mittens. You can either provide the materials or ask participants to bring their own yarn and needles. Any mittens made during this time can be donated to the mitten tree. This can be a really great way to support a good cause and have fun doing it with others.
